What Is Adobe InDesign and Why Learn It?
Adobe InDesign is the industry-standard software for page layout. It brings text, images and graphics together across many pages with exact control over grids, margins, columns, fonts and colour. Magazines, books, brochures, catalogues, annual reports, menus and many interactive PDFs are laid out in it.
It matters because good layout decides whether a document is read. Paragraph styles keep a hundred pages consistent, master pages repeat headers and page numbers automatically, and one change updates the whole document. Photoshop prepares the images and Illustrator draws the artwork, but InDesign is where they become a publication a printer can run.
- Publishers and printers: magazines, books, newspapers and catalogues.
- Advertising and marketing: brochures, leaflets, company profiles and reports.
- Hospitality and retail: menus, price lists and product catalogues.
- Education and corporate teams: prospectuses, workbooks and annual reports.
- Digital publishing: interactive PDFs and ebook-style documents.
Switch On the Grid to See How Layouts Are Built
Designers work on invisible guides. Tap an eye below to show or hide each layer of this sample page.
The same grid repeats on every page through master pages, which is why a long document stays consistent.

Software and Features You Will Use
InDesign is the centre. Around it sit the tools that feed it images and artwork.
Software versions and licences change. Ask our counsellor which Adobe tools are available on the lab systems and what you will need for home practice.
Real Projects on Real Page Sizes
You practise on the formats clients actually ask for, not on blank practice files.
Projects in the course
Every project follows a brief: who will read it, how it will be printed or viewed and what it must achieve. That habit separates a designer from someone who only knows the tools.
Using AI Sensibly in a Layout Workflow
AI helps around the edges. Layout judgement still decides whether a document works.
Images prepared in Photoshop
Use Photoshop and its AI tools to prepare or extend images, then place them as linked files so they update in your layout.
Vectors from Illustrator
Bring in logos and icons as vectors, so they print sharply at any size.
AI-assisted drafting
AI can suggest headlines or summaries, but every fact, name and number must be checked before it goes to print.
Version-specific features
Recent InDesign versions add assistive tools that vary by release. Ask which are available on the lab systems.
Templates and automation
Styles, master pages and data merge save more time than any shortcut and work in every version.
Rights and honesty
Check image and font licences and label AI-generated images honestly where it matters.
InDesign Shortcuts You Will Use Daily
Windows shortcuts. On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl and Option instead of Alt.
Shortcuts can differ slightly between versions and keyboard layouts. In class you build the habit by using them on real projects, not by memorising a list.
InDesign vs Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva and Word
Each tool has a job. Professionals combine them.
| Tool | Works with | Best for | Less suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| InDesign | Pages | Brochures, magazines, books, catalogues, reports, print PDFs | Drawing and photo editing |
| Illustrator | Vectors | Logos, icons, illustrations, packaging artwork | Long multi-page documents |
| Photoshop | Pixels (raster) | Photo editing, retouching, composites | Text-heavy layouts |
| Canva | Templates | Quick posts and simple documents | Professional print control |
| Word | Text documents | Letters, reports, writing | Designed layouts and print production |
| CorelDRAW | Vectors | Print shop work and signage | Long documents with styles |
Most print design jobs use InDesign with Photoshop and Illustrator. See our Photoshop course, Illustrator course and Graphic Design course for the full set.
