Difference Between CAD and BIM
CAD draws a building. BIM builds a digital version of it.
CAD: a wall is two lines
Change a window and you edit the plan, every elevation and every section by hand.
BIM: a wall is an object with data
Change it once and plans, sections, 3D and schedules all update.
You need both. AutoCAD teaches drawing discipline; Revit then makes sense because you know what a good drawing looks like.
AutoCAD → SketchUp → Revit → Render

Difference between AutoCAD and Revit
Verdict: AutoCAD is faster for small jobs and 2D detail; Revit is faster for big, changing projects. Employers value both.
Difference between Revit and SketchUp
Verdict: SketchUp while the design is being explored; Revit once it must be built and documented.
Lumion vs Enscape vs V-Ray
Verdict: Lumion for walkthroughs, Enscape for quick client reviews, V-Ray for photoreal marketing stills.

Building Design Course: 107 Questions Answered
Real questions students and parents ask us, grouped by topic.
Basics
Building design is the planning and drawing of a building: how rooms are arranged, how it sits on the plot, how it looks, and how it will be built. A building designer turns a client's needs into plans, elevations, sections, 3D views and working drawings.
A course that teaches you to plan buildings and produce professional drawings and 3D models with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Lumion, Enscape and V-Ray, finishing with a portfolio of real projects.
Look for a course that covers both drafting (AutoCAD) and BIM (Revit), teaches building planning and working drawings rather than only software buttons, includes rendering, live projects and a portfolio, and lets you attend a demo first. Fulcrum Creative School in Gandhipuram runs a 6-month course built this way, in the classroom and live online.
No. In India the title architect is protected under the Architects Act, 1972 and needs a recognised degree and registration with the Council of Architecture. Building designers and draughtsmen plan and draw buildings, usually working with architects and engineers who sign approvals.
No. Civil engineers design the structure, foundations and services so a building stands safely. Building design focuses on planning, drawings and visualisation. The two work closely, and many civil students take building design to improve their drawing and software skills.
Building design covers the whole building: site, plans, elevations, sections and construction drawings. Interior design focuses on spaces inside, furniture, finishes and lighting. Both use SketchUp and rendering, and some students learn both.
Preparing accurate technical drawings of buildings, such as plans, elevations, sections and details, usually in AutoCAD. It is the foundation of building design work.
Takes client or architect inputs, prepares plan options, draws working drawings, builds 3D models, makes renders, revises drawings after feedback and coordinates with engineers and site teams.
Course details

Eligibility
Most students first take a Diploma in Civil Engineering or Architecture after 10th. Talk to the counsellor about whether you can join the course directly.
Yes. The course starts from basics, so students after 12th can join, whatever their stream.
Yes. Diploma in Civil Engineering and Diploma in Architecture students join to add AutoCAD, Revit and rendering skills.
Yes. Civil students and graduates are a large part of each batch, because firms expect them to draw and model, not only calculate.
Yes, if you want to move into the building sector. Your CAD experience helps, and you learn building planning, BIM and drawing conventions. If you want to stay in machine design, see the mechanical CAD course instead.
Yes. Architecture students join to get faster at Revit, rendering and working drawings for internships and jobs.
Yes. You already know drawing basics, and the course adds modern software, BIM and visualisation.
Yes. Many good designers come from non-technical backgrounds. You need interest, patience and practice.
Yes. Freelance drafting, 3D elevations and remote BIM work can be done from home once you have experience and a good computer.
No. Students, graduates, working professionals and career changers all join.
No artistic talent is needed. Building drawings are technical and done in software. Freehand sketching helps you think, and the course gives simple practice.
Basic maths is enough: measurements, areas, scales and simple geometry. The software handles the precision.
Basic computer use is enough. You learn the software from the start.
It takes steady practice, not special talent. AutoCAD is quick to start; Revit takes longer because you learn how buildings are put together.
Software
AutoCAD first, to learn drawing conventions and precision. Then SketchUp for quick 3D, then Revit for BIM, then a render engine.
Yes. AutoCAD remains widely used in India for approval drawings, working drawings and detailing, even in firms that use Revit.
Neither is simply better. Revit is faster for large, changing projects and coordination; AutoCAD is faster for small jobs and detailed 2D work. Employers value people who know both.
Both, for different jobs. SketchUp is for quick concepts and 3D elevations; Revit is for accurate models and drawings that get built.
CAD draws lines that represent a building. BIM builds a model of real elements that carry data, so drawings, schedules and quantities update together.
Lumion is strong for walkthrough videos and landscapes, Enscape for quick real-time views inside Revit and SketchUp, and V-Ray for detailed photoreal stills. The course covers all three so you can match the tool to the job.
No. The course teaches Lumion, Enscape and V-Ray. Twinmotion works in a similar way, so the skills transfer if an employer uses it.
3ds Max is not part of this course. V-Ray, Lumion and Enscape cover most architectural visualisation needs; ask the team if you want 3ds Max separately.
No. The course uses Revit for BIM because it is more common in Indian firms and outsourcing companies. Concepts transfer if you need ArchiCAD later.
For AutoCAD and SketchUp, a modern laptop with 8 GB RAM works. For Revit and rendering, aim for 16 GB RAM or more and a dedicated graphics card. Check each software's current system requirements before buying.
Yes. Many students use laptops. Rendering in Lumion and Enscape needs a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.
Autodesk offers free education licences to eligible students; others have trial or paid plans. The trainers explain the legal options during the course.
You get an introduction to clash detection and Navisworks concepts in the BIM workflow module.
Yes, for finishing renders, making rendered plans and laying out presentation boards.
AI image tools for concept moods, AI render enhancement and upscaling, ChatGPT for briefs and reports, and early-stage massing tools, with clear rules on what AI cannot check.
AI speeds up concepts and images, but it does not understand site conditions, building rules, structure or client needs. Designers who use AI well will be faster, not replaced.
Planning and drawings
Arranging rooms, circulation, light and ventilation on a plot so the building works for the people using it and meets local rules.
Dimensioned drawings that builders use on site: plans, sections, details and schedules.
Drawings submitted to the local body for permission to build, usually a site plan, floor plans, elevation, section and area statement in the required format.
No. Approval drawings must be signed by a registered architect or a licensed engineer or surveyor, as per local rules. You learn to prepare them; a licensed professional signs and submits.
You learn the basics of the current Tamil Nadu building rules that affect drawings, such as setbacks, FSI and parking, and how to check the latest version before every project.
Clients often ask for Vastu. The course shows how to handle common requests in planning without compromising light, ventilation or rules.
A plan is a view from above, cut at about window height. An elevation is a straight view of one face. A section is a vertical cut through the building showing levels and heights.
A drawing that tells the site team exactly how to build part of the building, such as masonry, flooring, staircases or details.
Indian drawing practice (IS 962), basics of the National Building Code of India, Tamil Nadu building rules, and BIM concepts from ISO 19650, plus layer and file naming.
Floor space index is the total built-up area allowed on a plot divided by the plot area. It limits how much you can build, so it shapes every plan and is checked in the area statement.
The open spaces you must leave between the building and the plot boundaries on each side. Required setbacks depend on plot size, road width, building height and current local rules.
Place living spaces and bedrooms where they get daylight and breeze, use cross-ventilation with openings on opposite walls, shade west-facing walls and keep toilets and kitchens ventilated to the outside.
Plans and elevations are commonly at 1:100 or 1:50, site plans at 1:200 or smaller, and details at 1:20, 1:10 or larger.
BIM
A course that teaches you to model buildings as data-rich 3D models, usually in Revit, and to use them for drawings, schedules and coordination.
Yes, especially in larger projects and in companies that produce BIM models for clients in the USA, UK, Middle East and Australia.
Level of development: how detailed and reliable each model element is, from rough massing to fabrication-ready detail.
Checking a combined model for places where elements from different trades collide, such as a duct passing through a beam.
Many entry-level Revit modeller roles ask for the skills taught here. Your portfolio, speed and accuracy decide the result. Fulcrum gives placement support, not a job guarantee.
A person who combines models from different disciplines, runs clash checks and manages model standards. It is usually a role you grow into after modelling experience.
This course focuses on Revit Architecture. You learn to link and coordinate with MEP models. For electrical services, see the electrical CAD course.
Careers and salary
Yes, many students start as draughtsmen, Revit modellers or 3D visualisers. Results depend on your skills, portfolio and effort. Fulcrum provides placement support, not a job guarantee.
Architectural draughtsman, building designer, Revit or BIM modeller, 3D visualiser, approval drawing specialist, site and estimation assistant, and freelance designer.
Architecture firms, builders and developers, civil and structural consultants, BIM outsourcing companies, interior studios, contractors and visualisation studios.
Indicative starting salaries range from about ₹12,000 to ₹30,000 a month depending on role and city, rising with experience. BIM coordinators with experience can earn considerably more.
Indicatively, freshers start around ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a month, with Revit and BIM roles often at the higher end. Pay grows with speed, accuracy and experience.
Revit and BIM roles often pay more than pure AutoCAD drafting, especially at outsourcing companies. Knowing both is the safest combination.
Yes for people who enjoy planning spaces, detail and software. Construction keeps creating work, but growth depends on skills, portfolio and learning new tools.
Yes. Freelancers prepare house plans, 3D elevations, renders and drafting work. Most start freelancing after some job experience.
Rates vary with plot size, number of drawings, 3D views and revisions. Freelancers usually quote per project or per square foot. The freelancing module shows you how to build a rate card.
Many Revit and BIM professionals work with or for firms in the Middle East, UK, Australia and elsewhere. Overseas jobs usually ask for experience, a strong portfolio and sometimes a degree, so plan for a few years of work first.
Yes, freelance drafting, 3D elevations and some remote BIM work can be done from home once you have experience and a suitable computer.
Yes. Coimbatore has steady residential and commercial construction, many architecture firms and builders, and BIM companies serving overseas clients.
Yes. Portfolio review, resume help, mock interviews and referrals to firms. It is support, not a guarantee of a job.
The course prepares you for internships with office-style live projects, file standards and interview practice, and the placement team shares internship and job leads where available.
6 to 8 strong projects: a house, an apartment or commercial building in Revit, working drawings, renders, a walkthrough link and presentation boards, each with a short explanation.
It varies. Students with a complete portfolio and good speed in AutoCAD and Revit tend to find roles sooner.
B.Arch is a 5-year degree that lets you register as an architect. Building design is a 6-month skill course for drawing, BIM and visualisation jobs. Choose based on your goals, time and budget; many architects also take software courses.
Future scope
More BIM, more real-time visualisation, more AI-assisted concepts and more collaboration across cities and countries. People who can model, document and present well will stay in demand.
There is no single nationwide mandate for all projects, but large public and private projects increasingly ask for BIM deliverables. Learning BIM now prepares you for that shift.
Construction slows in downturns, so jobs can slow too. Designers with BIM and visualisation skills and a mix of clients are usually more resilient.
Depending on your path: Navisworks and coordination, Revit MEP or structure, advanced visualisation, project management, or a degree if you want to become an architect or engineer.
