What is DTP

What is Desktop Publishing (DTP)?

Desktop publishing (DTP) is designing and preparing pages on a computer so they can be printed or shared as PDFs. A DTP designer arranges text, images and graphics on a grid, sets the typography, manages colour and checks the file so it prints correctly. Books, magazines, newspapers, catalogues, brochures, forms, labels and packaging are all made this way.

What Separates DTP Operators From Pre-Press Professionals

Design is half the job. The other half is making sure the press prints exactly what you designed.

🖥️ RGB: how screens show colour

Bright, glowing colours made with light. Some of them cannot be printed with ink.

RedGreenBluePink

🖨️ CMYK: how presses print colour

Four inks layered on paper. Colours look slightly calmer, so you convert and proof before printing.

CyanMagentaYellowBlack

Print rules you will use on every job

  • Add 3 mm bleed on every side that touches the edge.
  • Keep text 3–5 mm inside the trim (safe zone).
  • Images at 300 ppi at the final printed size.
  • Use 100% black (K) for small text, rich black only for large areas.
  • Check total ink and overprint settings with your printer.
  • Use Pantone spot colours when a brand colour must match exactly.
  • Embed or outline fonts, including Tamil fonts.
  • Export the PDF standard your printer asks for, often PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4.

Common print sizes you will design for

  • Visiting card3.5 × 2 in (≈ 89 × 51 mm)
  • DL99 × 210 mm
  • A5148 × 210 mm
  • A4210 × 297 mm

Tamil DTP

Tamil Typing and Tamil Layouts, Done Right

Tamil Nadu print work is often Tamil or bilingual. Doing it correctly is a skill many operators lack.

Unicode Tamil வணக்கம் கோயம்புத்தூர்

  • Typing with Tamil99 and phonetic keyboards
  • Correct letter joining with the right text settings
  • Converting legacy Tamil text to Unicode and proofreading it
  • Bilingual Tamil–English layouts that look balanced
  • Embedding Tamil fonts so the printer sees what you see
  • Tamil99Keyboard layout standardised by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1999; fast once learned.
  • PhoneticType Tamil using English letters by sound; easy for beginners.
  • Legacy fontsOlder non-Unicode fonts; you learn to convert them safely.
  • InDesignUnicode font + World-Ready composer for correct Tamil shaping.

Software

Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Acrobat Pro, plus Tamil typing and Tamil font handling.

PageMaker is discontinued. Its modern replacement is Adobe InDesign, which is what employers use now. We explain PageMaker files if you meet them at work.

InDesign is the industry tool for multi-page layouts such as magazines, books and catalogues, with master pages, styles and print export.

CorelDRAW is widely used in local printing presses for visiting cards, invitations, flex banners and labels.

To retouch, cut out and colour-correct images and convert them to CMYK at the right resolution for print.

For logos, icons, packaging dielines and vector artwork that prints sharply at any size.

Checking, preflighting, editing and exporting PDFs that printers accept.

They do different jobs: CorelDRAW for single-page print-shop work and InDesign for multi-page publications. Learning both makes you more employable.

Current versions of Adobe Creative Cloud apps and CorelDRAW, with notes on differences you may meet in older office systems.

Yes. Daily shortcuts, styles and templates are taught so you can work at the speed presses expect.

The DTP course teaches CorelDRAW alongside InDesign and Acrobat, because most print jobs need more than one tool. Ask the counsellor if you need a shorter option.

You practise in the lab during the course. For home use, Adobe and Corel offer trials and paid plans; the trainers explain legal options.

Yes, carefully: AI image tools and writing assistants for drafts, with clear guidance on checking accuracy, rights and print quality.

The focus is professional print tools. We show where Canva fits and why printers prefer files from InDesign, CorelDRAW or Illustrator.

Tamil DTP

Yes. You learn Tamil typing with the Tamil99 and phonetic keyboards and how to use Tamil Unicode fonts.

The modern standard for Tamil text. It works across software, devices and the web, unlike older non-Unicode fonts.

A Tamil keyboard layout standardised by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1999, widely used for fast Tamil typing.

Yes, with Unicode Tamil fonts and the right text settings (World-Ready composer) so letters join correctly. This is taught in class.

Yes, using Unicode Tamil fonts and a Tamil keyboard input.

Usually because of old non-Unicode fonts or text settings that do not support Tamil shaping. The course shows how to fix it.

Yes. Converter tools can change many legacy Tamil font encodings to Unicode; you then check and correct the result.

Unicode fonts such as Latha and Noto Sans Tamil are common starting points; you learn how to choose readable Tamil fonts for print.

Most learners type comfortably in a few weeks of daily practice; speed keeps improving with use.

Yes. You learn to balance both scripts with matching sizes, spacing and hierarchy.

Yes. Presses, publishers, schools, temples, political and community groups, and local businesses regularly need Tamil and bilingual print work.

Print production

Preparing files so they print correctly: size, bleed, colour mode, resolution, fonts, imposition and the final PDF.

Extra artwork beyond the trim edge, usually 3 mm, so no white edges appear after cutting.

Usually 300 ppi at the final printed size.

Printing presses use cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks. RGB files can shift colour when printed.

Using colour profiles and proofs so colours stay consistent from screen to press.

A PDF standard made for printing. PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4 are common choices; your printer tells you which they prefer.

A check for missing fonts, low-resolution images, wrong colour modes and missing bleed before sending a file to print.

Arranging pages or copies on a large sheet so they print, fold and cut in the right order.

Paper weight (GSM), coated and uncoated stock, lamination, spot UV, foil and die-cutting, and how they affect your file.

Black made from CMYK inks plus black, used for large dark areas. Small text should use 100% black only, so it prints sharply.

A pre-mixed ink such as a Pantone colour, used when a brand colour must match exactly.

Grams per square metre, a measure of paper weight. Visiting cards use heavy board; flyers and book pages use lighter paper.

Offset suits large quantities with consistent colour; digital suits short runs, quick jobs and personalised prints.

A sample print or PDF that you check and approve before the full print run.

The common size is 3.5 × 2 inches (about 89 × 51 mm) at trim, plus bleed.

Typography and layout

Good typography makes pages easy to read and look professional. Font choice, size, spacing and hierarchy matter more than decoration.

The space between lines of text. Comfortable leading for body text is usually a little more than the font size.

Kerning adjusts space between two letters; tracking adjusts spacing across a whole word or line.

Usually about 9 to 12 points, depending on the typeface, reader and page size.

A set of columns, margins and gutters that keeps text and images aligned and consistent across pages.

Template pages in InDesign that hold repeating items such as page numbers, headers and logos.

Saved text formats you apply with one click, so headings and body text stay consistent and are easy to change.

Usually two families are enough: one for headings and one for body text.

A single word or short line left alone at the end or start of a column. DTP designers fix them for a clean look.

Empty space around text and images. It makes pages calmer and easier to read.
