Where You Live

Race Course and Its Landmarks

The area grew around an elliptical track once used for horse riding and racing.

The track at the heart of Race Course was developed into a formal racecourse in 1815 by the then Collector of Coimbatore, John Sullivan, who also had trees planted along its edge. Today it is a popular walking and recreation area, and the surrounding streets hold old institutions such as All Souls Church, built in 1872, and the Cosmopolitan Club, established in 1891, along with several colonial-era bungalows.

For a design student this is a rich visual setting. Stained glass, old stone lettering, metal gates, club crests and quiet signboards show how craft, proportion and restraint can feel timeless. Many designers say the best way to improve is to study things that have lasted. A short walk around Race Course in the evening is a lesson in typography, symmetry and colour that costs nothing.

Start Your Own

From Kitchen Table to Brand Identity

Home-based food, craft, boutique and gifting businesses grow fastest when they look consistent.

People who start a small venture from home often put most of the effort into the product and very little into the packaging, the name board or the social media look. Customers, however, make decisions with their eyes first. A consistent logo, two or three colours used everywhere, a readable label and a tidy Instagram grid make a one-person business feel established.

The course helps you do this yourself. You learn to build a simple logo in Illustrator, prepare product photographs in Photoshop, design labels and boxes, and use Canva to keep posts consistent. You also learn how to brief a printer, which saves money and frustration. For many home entrepreneurs, this alone repays the effort.

Plain Answers

Common Concerns

"I have never used design software."

Everyone starts there. The first classes assume nothing.

"I only want to design my own brand."

Tell the counsellor. A focused plan may suit you better than the full course.

"My teenager is shy."

Bring them for a free demo class. Seeing the lab and meeting the trainer eases nerves.

"I need evening classes."

Ask which batches are open. We are open until 9 PM Monday to Saturday.

"Can I show my work to friends?"

Yes. Showing work and getting feedback is a core part of the learning.

"Will I get a certificate?"

Yes, a Fulcrum Creative School course certificate on completion, subject to the current requirements.

Calm and Steady

Learning at a Comfortable Pace

Race Course is not a hurried place, and neither is a good design education. The early classes are about slowing down to look: why one invitation feels elegant and another cluttered, why a few well-chosen words in a clean typeface beat a crowded page, why the gap between two lines matters as much as the lines themselves. You practise this with simple tasks before touching advanced tools.

The software comes in layers. Photoshop shows how to edit photographs and combine images. Illustrator teaches precise shapes, which is how logos are built. InDesign brings in multi-page layouts, useful for menus, catalogues and brochures. Canva helps you produce consistent posts quickly. After each stage you complete a small project, show it and get comments. That rhythm of making, showing and revising is the heart of the course.

  1. 1
    Look first

    Observation and design principles.

  2. 2
    Edit and combine

    Photoshop practice.

  3. 3
    Draw and build

    Illustrator logos and icons.

  4. 4
    Arrange and print

    InDesign layouts.

  5. 5
    Present

    Portfolio and feedback.

Try This Evening

A Free Design Lesson on Your Walk

If you walk on the Race Course track, try this. Notice three things with letters on them: a signboard, a plaque and a gate or building name. For each, ask yourself what first catches your eye, how the letters are spaced, and whether the colours help or hurt readability. Take photos and note your answers.

You have just done the same kind of critical looking we ask students to do in class. Over the weeks you will build a vocabulary for what you see, and your own work will improve as a result. Bring your photos to the demo class if you like. We would be happy to talk through them.

What Next

Work, Business or Further Study

Some learners use the course to move into design jobs. Others use it to run their own business better. Others continue to UI/UX, motion graphics or digital marketing. All are good outcomes. None is guaranteed, and results depend on your portfolio, effort and market. Placement assistance covers portfolio guidance, resume preparation, mock interviews and information about openings.

A visit costs nothing. Come on a quiet afternoon, bring your questions and see whether it feels right.
