Illustrator for Fashion in Six Points
- Adobe Illustrator is vector software. Flats, prints and logos stay sharp at any size, from a hangtag to a banner.
- Flats are the language of production. Pattern makers, merchandisers and factories read technical flats, not artistic sketches.
- Tech packs start in Illustrator. Flats, callouts, artwork placement and colourways are drawn here, then laid out as PDF pages.
- Prints are built as repeat tiles. Pattern swatches let one motif fill any garment and be recoloured in seconds.
- It connects to the whole CAD chain. Illustrator artwork moves into CLO 3D, Photoshop and InDesign; patterns stay in Lectra or Gerber.
- 45 days is enough to be productive. With daily practice you can draw clean flats and build tech pack pages independently.
What Is Adobe Illustrator, and Why Do Fashion Designers Use It?
Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics program made by Adobe. Instead of storing a picture as millions of coloured pixels, it stores shapes as mathematical paths: points joined by straight or curved lines. That means a drawing can be resized, recoloured and edited endlessly without losing quality, and every line can be measured, aligned and copied exactly. For fashion, where a collar must match on the left and right, a stitch line must sit exactly 6 mm from the edge and the same shirt must appear in eight colourways, that precision is the reason Illustrator became the everyday drawing tool of design rooms.
In the fashion industry, Illustrator sits between the idea and the factory. A designer may start with a hand sketch or a mood board, but the moment a style needs to be costed, sampled or sent to a buyer, it is redrawn as a technical flat in Illustrator. The same file then supplies the print artwork for the textile unit, the label and hangtag artwork for the trims supplier, the colourway sheet for the merchandiser and the drawings inside the tech pack. In Coimbatore and Tiruppur, where garment exporters and buying houses work with overseas brands every day, clean Illustrator files are part of how styles are approved and orders move forward.
Fashion designers use Illustrator for five main jobs: drawing technical flats of garments, designing prints and surface patterns, creating logos and brand identity for a label, building mood, colour and collection boards, and preparing tech pack and specification pages for production. This course trains you in all five, in that practical order.

Workflow with CLO 3D
Prints, logos and graphics made in Illustrator are placed on CLO 3D garments as textures and graphics. CLO renders come back into Illustrator for line sheets and tech packs.
Workflow with Lectra & Gerber
Patterns and grading live in Lectra Modaris or Gerber AccuMark. Illustrator flats guide the pattern maker, and approved patterns are shared as DXF while the flats stay in the tech pack.
Workflow with Photoshop
Photoshop cleans fabric scans, builds textures and mock-ups and retouches renders. Final print artwork goes back to Illustrator so it stays scalable and print-ready.
Workflow with InDesign
Illustrator files are placed into InDesign to lay out multi-page portfolios, look books and long tech packs, and they update automatically when the artwork changes.
Workflow with AI fashion tools
AI image tools help explore moods, motifs and colour ideas quickly. The chosen idea is then redrawn cleanly in Illustrator, because AI images are not vector, editable or ready for production.
Export for production
Files go out as PDF for tech packs, AI and EPS for printers and trims suppliers, SVG for web, and PNG or JPG for presentations, each with the right colour mode and resolution.
Technical Flats vs Fashion Illustration
The industry uses two kinds of fashion drawing. This course focuses on the one factories actually build from.
Technical flats (this course)
Flat, proportional line drawings of a garment, front and back, showing every seam, stitch, button and pocket. Pattern makers, merchandisers and factories build garments from flats, and almost every tech pack starts with one.
Drawn in: Adobe Illustrator · Used by: exporters, brands, buying houses
Fashion illustration
Expressive drawings of a garment on a stylised figure, used for mood boards, collections and presentations. It sells the idea, but it is not precise enough to sew from. Learn it in our Fashion Designing course.
Drawn in: hand media, Procreate, Illustrator · Used by: designers, students
Why Adobe Illustrator? Illustrator is vector software, so a flat drawn once stays sharp at any size, from a thumbnail on a line sheet to a full-page tech pack. Brushes for stitches, symbols for buttons and zips, pattern swatches for prints and global colours for colourways make it the standard drawing tool in apparel design rooms. In Coimbatore and Tiruppur, garment exporters and buying houses regularly ask designers and merchandisers for Illustrator flats when sharing styles with overseas buyers.
Sketches, Flats, Technical Flats & Drawing Standards
Fashion sketching
Loose drawings on a figure to explore ideas. In the course you use croquis templates in Illustrator so your digital sketches have correct proportions.
Fashion flats
Simplified flat drawings of garments for line sheets and range plans, showing style lines and colour without every stitch.
Technical flats & garment drawings
Fully detailed, proportional drawings with seams, topstitching, trims, linings and inside views, ready for pattern makers and factories.
Technical Drawing Standards You Will Follow
Why vector drawing matters: every flat is built from editable paths, so changing a collar shape or a pocket size takes seconds, and the same symbol for a button or zip updates across every drawing at once. That is how one designer manages a range of fifty styles.
The Technical Flat Lab
Build a flat the way you will in Illustrator. Pick the garment and sleeve, switch layers on and off, apply a repeat print and generate colourways.

- Hangtags and brand sheet
Mood boards & colour boards
Build trend, mood and colour boards that set the direction for a collection and guide colourways.

- Colour palettes and swatch libraries
- Fabric and trim boards
Portfolio & collection presentation
Present a mini collection the way buyers and employers expect to see it.
- Collection line-up and line sheet
- Colourway pages
- Portfolio layout and PDF export
Fashion Tech Packs, Measurement Sheets & Specification Sheets
A tech pack is the instruction manual a factory uses to make a garment exactly as designed.
Can Illustrator create tech packs? Yes. Many brands and export houses build tech packs directly in Illustrator, or draw everything in Illustrator and lay out long packs in InDesign or a PLM system. In the course you build complete tech pack pages from your own flats and export them as print-ready PDFs.

Illustrator vs CorelDRAW, CLO 3D, Photoshop, Canva & Procreate
Adobe Illustrator is one of the most widely used tools for technical flats and tech packs in fashion brands and export houses. CorelDRAW is still used in some Indian garment units, hand sketching is best for early ideas, and CLO 3D shows the garment in 3D. Most designers sketch ideas, draw flats in Illustrator, then add 3D when needed.

Adobe Illustrator is vector graphics software from Adobe. It draws with editable paths instead of pixels, so drawings stay sharp at any size and can be changed precisely, which makes it ideal for fashion flats, prints, logos and tech packs.
Because it gives precise, editable and scalable drawings. Designers use it for technical flats, repeat prints, logos and labels, mood and colour boards, colourways and tech pack pages that factories and buyers can read.
For flats, prints, logos and tech packs, yes, because Illustrator is vector and precise. Photoshop is better for fabric textures, photo prints, mock-ups and retouching. Most fashion designers use both.
Yes. Technical flats are the main fashion use of Illustrator, with brushes for stitches, symbols for trims and reflect tools for symmetry.
Yes. Many brands and export houses build tech pack pages directly in Illustrator, with flats, callouts, measurement points, BOM and artwork, then export them as PDF.
Canva is good for quick social posts and simple boards, but it cannot draw precise technical flats or production-ready prints. Illustrator is the professional tool for fashion production files.
Procreate is great for expressive fashion sketching on an iPad. Illustrator is needed for flats, prints and tech packs. Many designers sketch in Procreate and redraw final flats in Illustrator.
They do different jobs. Illustrator makes 2D flats, prints and tech packs, while CLO 3D shows garments in 3D for fit and renders. They work together, and Illustrator artwork is often placed on CLO 3D garments.
Accurate proportions, symmetry, clear line weights, front and back views, no shading, labelled callouts, organised layers and consistent file naming, so factories can read a flat without confusion.
Yes. Module 04 covers motif design, block, half-drop and brick repeats, pattern swatches, colourways, placement prints and surface design artwork.
Yes. Module 05 covers a fashion label's logo, brand colours and typography, applied to labels, hangtags and packaging, along with mood and colour boards.
A measurement sheet lists points of measure, sizes and tolerances marked on the flat. A specification sheet summarises the key details of a style for quick approval. Both are part of a tech pack and are covered in Module 06.
Lectra and Gerber handle patterns, grading and markers. Illustrator flats guide the pattern maker and stay in the tech pack, while approved patterns are shared as DXF files. The 5-month Fashion CAD course teaches Lectra and Gerber.
At Fulcrum, the Fashion Illustrator course teaches Adobe Illustrator for fashion: drawing precise technical flats, prints, colourways, labels and tech pack pages that brands and factories use to make garments.
It is about Adobe Illustrator software for fashion. Hand fashion illustration on croquis figures is taught in the Fashion Designing course.
A technical flat is a precise, flat line drawing of a garment from the front and back, showing seams, stitches, buttons, pockets and other construction details. Pattern makers and factories use flats to understand exactly how to make a garment.
