Key Takeaways

CLO 3D in Six Points

  • CLO is 3D garment software from CLO Virtual Fashion, a company founded in Seoul in 2009. You draft real 2D patterns and see them sewn on a 3D avatar.
  • It replaces many physical samples. Brands check fit, drape and colour on screen before cutting cloth, which saves time, fabric and courier costs.
  • It works with pattern CAD. Patterns move between CLO and Lectra, Gerber AccuMark and Optitex through DXF files.
  • Beginners can learn it. If you understand basic garment construction, 45 days of daily practice is enough to work independently.
  • Demand comes from exporters and brands. Coimbatore and Tiruppur garment units, buying houses and global brands use 3D sampling.
  • Your portfolio decides the job. Real client projects, turntables and tech packs matter more than the certificate alone.
The Basics

What Is CLO 3D?

CLO 3D (officially called CLO) is a 3D fashion design software that turns flat 2D sewing patterns into realistic virtual garments. You draw or import pattern pieces, tell the software which seams join, choose a fabric, and CLO simulates how that garment hangs, stretches and folds on a 3D avatar of any size. Designers use it to test styles, pattern makers use it to check fit, and merchandisers use the renders to approve samples and sell collections before production.

What makes CLO different from general 3D modelling tools is that it is built on real garment construction. Every piece has a grainline, seam allowance, notches and sewing lines, and every fabric has measurable physical properties such as weight, stretch and bending. If the pattern is wrong in CLO, it will be wrong in the factory, which is why the software is trusted for production decisions and not only for pretty pictures.

History of CLO 3D

  1. 2009CLO Virtual Fashion is founded in Seoul, South Korea, around its own cloth-simulation technology.
  2. Marvelous DesignerThe same company's cloth engine powers Marvelous Designer, used for clothing in games, films and animation.
  3. CLO for fashionA separate product, CLO, is built for the apparel industry: real patterns, fabric data, grading and tech packs.
  4. TodayCLO is used by fashion brands, garment manufacturers, schools and freelance 3D designers worldwide, with an online collaboration platform for sharing 3D samples.

Why the Fashion Industry Uses CLO 3D

A traditional sample cycle means drafting a pattern, cutting a sample, stitching it, couriering it to the buyer, waiting for comments and repeating the whole loop two or three times. Each round costs fabric, tailoring time and days of shipping. With CLO, the buyer and the factory can look at the same 3D sample, mark comments on it and approve changes on screen. Physical samples are still made, but usually fewer of them and only once the 3D version is right.

For Coimbatore and Tiruppur, where garment exporters work with overseas buyers every day, this matters a lot. Buyers increasingly ask suppliers to share 3D files or renders alongside physical samples, and teams that can produce them win faster approvals. That shift is why 3D garment skills now sit next to Lectra, Gerber and Optitex in many apparel job descriptions.

Why Learn CLO 3D?

Benefits of Digital Garment Simulation

What changes when a garment is made in 3D first.

✂️

Fewer physical samples

Fix fit and proportion on screen, then cut one accurate sample instead of several trial ones.

⏱️

Faster approvals

Send a 3D render or turntable to a buyer the same day instead of waiting for courier rounds.

📏

Better fit decisions

Strain and fit maps show exactly where a garment is tight or loose on every size.

🎨

Instant colourways

Change fabric, print and trims in seconds and show a whole range in one meeting.

🌱

Less waste

Fewer discarded samples means less fabric, thread and shipping, which supports sustainability goals.

🛒

Sell before you sew

Brands use photoreal renders for line sheets, pre-orders and online catalogues.

Try It Yourself

The Virtual Fit Lab

This is how CLO's strain map works. Change the avatar size and the fabric, and watch where the garment pulls, how it drapes and when it needs grading.

Compare

CLO 3D vs Marvelous Designer, Lectra, Gerber & Optitex

These tools are often confused. Most of them do different jobs, and many companies use two or three together.

Quick answer

CLO 3D is one of the most widely used tools for 3D apparel sampling with real patterns and tech packs. Marvelous Designer, from the same company, is for clothing in games and films. Lectra Modaris and Gerber AccuMark are 2D pattern-making, grading and marker systems used in production, and Optitex combines 2D patterns with its own 3D tool. For a fashion career, learn CLO for 3D and at least one 2D pattern system.

CLO 3D: advantages

  • Uses real patterns, so 3D fit reflects production
  • Accurate fabric physics and fit maps
  • Photoreal renders, turntables and runway animation
  • Tech packs and colourways in the same file
  • Exchanges DXF with Lectra, Gerber and Optitex
  • Student pricing available from CLO

CLO 3D: disadvantages

  • Needs a capable computer with a dedicated graphics card
  • Paid licence (around $50 a month for individuals)
  • Does not make markers or cut plans
  • Accurate results depend on accurate fabric data
  • You still need garment construction knowledge
AI in Fashion Design

CLO 3D + AI

AI speeds up ideas and textures. CLO turns them into garments that can actually be sewn.

  • ConceptsMidjourneyMoodboards and silhouette ideas
  • PrintsAdobe FireflyGenerate and refine print artwork
  • TexturesPhotoshop Generative FillExtend and clean fabric scans
  • WritingChatGPTTech pack notes and buyer emails

AI image tools can produce a beautiful dress in seconds, but the picture has no pattern, no seam allowance and no fabric data, so a factory cannot make it. In the course you use AI to explore moods, prints and textures, then rebuild the best idea properly in CLO with real patterns and fabrics. That combination of AI speed and 3D accuracy is what brands are now hiring for.

CLO 3D, officially called CLO, is 3D fashion design software that turns 2D sewing patterns into realistic virtual garments. You draw or import patterns, sew them on a 3D avatar, apply fabrics with real physical properties and check fit, drape and colour before making a physical sample.

CLO is made by CLO Virtual Fashion, a company founded in Seoul, South Korea, in 2009. The same company also develops Marvelous Designer.

Fashion brands, garment exporters, buying houses, pattern makers, technical designers, merchandisers, fashion schools, e-commerce teams and freelance 3D fashion designers use CLO to create and approve garments digitally.

The CLO 3D course is 45 days, organised into 7 modules from setup and avatars to tech packs, client projects and portfolio. Weekday and weekend batches are available, and the counsellor confirms current timings.

Yes. The course starts from installation and the interface, so you do not need any 3D experience. Basic garment knowledge helps you move faster, and the trainer explains the construction basics you need.

CLO has a moderate learning curve. The tools are logical once you understand how patterns are sewn together. Most students can build a simple garment within the first two weeks and work independently by the end of 45 days of regular practice.

Yes. Fashion designers are one of the main users of CLO. It lets you show ideas as realistic 3D garments instead of flat sketches, test fabrics and colourways quickly and communicate clearly with pattern makers and factories.

It helps but is not required. CLO uses real 2D patterns, so pattern knowledge makes your garments more accurate. The course teaches the pattern tools inside CLO, and you can add a full pattern course or the Fashion CAD course later.

Students who have completed 12th, graduates in any subject and working professionals can join. There is no entrance test. A fashion, textile or garment background is useful but not compulsory.

Yes. Students can join right after 12th. Many combine the CLO 3D course with a fashion designing programme or degree to build a specialist skill early.

They are made by the same company for different purposes. CLO is built for the fashion industry, with production-ready patterns, fabric data, grading and tech packs. Marvelous Designer is built for clothing in games, films and animation. For a fashion or apparel career, CLO is the right choice.

Lectra's pattern software, Modaris, is used for 2D pattern drafting, grading and marker making in production. CLO is used for 3D sampling, fit checks and rendering. Many companies use both, moving patterns between them as DXF files.

Gerber AccuMark is a 2D pattern, grading and marker system used in cutting rooms. CLO 3D is a 3D garment simulation tool. Patterns are exported from AccuMark as DXF and imported into CLO for 3D sampling.

Both offer 3D garment simulation. Optitex combines 2D pattern making and 3D in one suite, while CLO is widely used by brands for 3D sampling, renders and tech packs. Which one you use often depends on what your employer or buyer works with.

Yes. CLO imports and exports DXF pattern files in AAMA and ASTM formats, which are used by Lectra, Gerber AccuMark and Optitex. The course includes a practical DXF import and export workflow.

CLO exports OBJ and FBX for 3D models and animation, glTF for web viewers, DXF for patterns, PDF for tech packs, and images and videos for renders and turntables, along with its own project files.

Yes. Module 05 covers render settings, cameras, HDRI lighting, photoreal renders, turntable export and walk animations, so you can present garments the way brands and buyers expect.

Yes. Module 06 covers the tech pack workflow in CLO: renders, measurements, bill of materials, callouts and construction notes, exported as a PDF for factories and buyers.

Yes. You learn fabric physical properties such as weight, stretch, bending and thickness, how to match a real swatch, and how to apply textures and prints so the 3D garment behaves like the real fabric.

Yes. Students work on real client projects with revision rounds, along with industry-style projects such as shirts, dresses, jackets and colourway ranges, and module assignments.

Yes. You receive a Fulcrum Creative School CLO 3D course certificate after completing the course and projects. CLO Virtual Fashion also runs its own separate certification programmes, which you can take independently.

Yes. Placement support continues until you are placed: portfolio review, resume and LinkedIn help, mock 3D sampling tests and referrals to 100+ hiring partners including exporters, brands and design studios. It is support, not a job guarantee.

3D sampling assistant, CLO 3D designer, 3D technical designer, fashion CAD designer, digital fashion designer and freelance 3D fashion designer, with garment exporters, buying houses, brands, e-commerce companies and design studios.

In India, freshers in 3D sampling roles typically start around ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month, CLO 3D designers earn around ₹20,000 to ₹40,000, and experienced 3D technical designers can earn ₹30,000 to ₹55,000 or more. These are indicative ranges that depend on the company, city, experience and portfolio.

Yes. Brands and start-ups outsource 3D samples, renders and tech packs. A strong portfolio with turntables and fit maps helps you win clients through referrals, LinkedIn, Behance and freelance platforms. Paid commercial work needs your own CLO licence.

Yes. Global brands and buying offices hire 3D designers, and some roles are remote. Employers look for a strong portfolio, fit knowledge and good communication. CLO works the same worldwide, so your skills transfer directly.

Coimbatore and Tiruppur are major apparel and export hubs, and buyers increasingly ask suppliers for 3D samples and renders. That is creating demand for people who can combine garment knowledge with CLO 3D.

CLO's individual licence costs about $50 a month or $450 a year, and students can get 50% off. Companies and institutions get custom quotes. You do not need to buy a licence to learn at Fulcrum, because you practise on lab systems in class.

CLO runs on Windows and Mac. A modern multi-core processor, 16 GB of RAM or more and a dedicated graphics card give smooth simulation and rendering. For online batches, the counsellor will help check whether your laptop is suitable.

Yes. Live online batches follow the same syllabus, projects and reviews as the classroom course in Gandhipuram, so you can join from anywhere in Tamil Nadu or India.

Yes. Trainers explain in English and Tamil and demonstrate every step in CLO, so you can follow in the language you are most comfortable with.

Photoreal renders, a turntable and walk animation, fit maps across sizes, colourway ranges and at least one complete tech pack, including your client project work.

Not completely. CLO reduces the number of physical samples by fixing fit, proportion and colour on screen first. Most brands still approve a final physical sample before bulk production.

AI tools help with moodboards, print ideas, textures and writing tech pack notes. CLO then turns the chosen idea into real patterns and fabrics that a factory can produce. The course shows how to combine both responsibly.

Choose the 45-day CLO 3D course if you already know garments or patterns and want 3D skills quickly. Choose the 5-month Fashion CAD course if you want Lectra, Optitex, Gerber and CLO 3D together for pattern room and CAD jobs.

Yes. Boutique owners use CLO to show customers realistic designs and colour options before stitching, which reduces alterations and helps close orders.

Yes. Merchandisers use 3D samples and renders to share styles with buyers, collect comments faster and reduce courier rounds for physical samples.
